Nostalgia Beckons

The vintage decor wave sweeping through Indian restaurants can be attributed to a collective yearning for nostalgia. With modern life becoming increasingly fast-paced and digital, people are seeking solace in the comforting embrace of the past. Vintage decor transports patrons to a bygone era, evoking memories of simpler times and instilling a sense of warmth and familiarity.

Retro-style interiors inspired by the design of the 50s, 60s and 70s of the twentieth century, full of vivid colours, geometric patterns or seemingly mismatched furniture, surprisingly often returning in restaurant design.

When Neha Gupta, Restaurateur and Founder, Beyond Design Bistro decided to launch a restaurant, her idea was to resonate retro-vibe. Nineteen 68, The 48-seater-restaurant is as experimental in its interiors as they are with its menu. Fusing mouldings and cornices reminiscent of classical architecture with innately contemporary framed artwork, the Gupta duo has imbibed the best of both worlds in the restaurant. Chequered flooring matching the hue of the walls subtly outlines the retro-vibe that is made prominent by the chairs in the space.

Rekindling Memories

One of the key reasons behind the growing popularity of vintage decor is its ability to rekindle fond memories and emotions. Retro furnishings, including antique furniture, vintage posters, and old-fashioned light fixtures, create an ambiance that stimulates conversation and connection. Patrons are drawn to the charm and character of these elements, which foster an intimate and inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a bygone era.

A walk through the mirrored doors of this appealing restaurant lands you up in a music festival of the 70’s and 80’s where disco, rock music, funk, and jazz remained popular throughout the era. Every pillar manifests the retro culture that recognises the work of the songsters. The restaurant is all gussied up with the phonograph, electric guitars, vintage cassettes, and wall frames creating a design collage. A portrayal of Marilyn Monroe and a depiction of Elvis Presley is felicitous to the retro theme.

Luxuriate in the comfortable lounge seating couched with their in-house bar and sip on your favourite drinks. There is a community table to express your passion for food and drinks. The music in the background is just not retro, they play new songs too. Old Times’ Sake in Mumbai has become a go to place for vintage lovers.

“Vintage decor has become a driving force in shaping the dining experience. Its ability to foster intimacy and create a welcoming ambiance is unparalleled. The trend towards retro and vintage looks is a reflection of our collective longing for authenticity and connection in a fast-paced world," Arjun Singh of the Old Times Sake cafe in Mumbai commented.

Unique Identity and Storytelling

Restaurants have recognized the power of vintage decor to set them apart from the crowd. By incorporating unique and carefully curated vintage pieces, establishments can create a distinct identity that resonates with customers. Each vintage item carries its own story, giving the restaurant a sense of history and authenticity. Diners are increasingly drawn to these narratives, seeking experiences that transcend the ordinary.

The influence of vintage decor extends beyond individual restaurants, with an overarching trend towards retro aesthetics in the interior design industry. From art deco-inspired lounges to mid-century modern diners, the appeal of vintage elements has captivated designers and restaurateurs alike. By embracing retro styles, restaurants can tap into a broader cultural fascination with nostalgia, catering to a diverse clientele seeking a unique and memorable dining experience.

"Vintage decor is like a time machine that allows us to transport our guests back to an era of elegance and nostalgia. It creates an atmosphere that sparks conversation and evokes cherished memories," Emma Johnson, Interior Designer from Goa said.

She further added that incorporating vintage elements in restaurant design is a powerful way to differentiate in a crowded market. It gives a unique identity and tells a story that resonates with the customers, creating a truly memorable dining experience.

Amit Pal, Bussiness Partner at Tanatan shared “We have received an outstanding response for Tanatan Juhu, Tanatan Dubai, Tanatan Kholapur Tanatan Shivaji Park, Tanatan Udaipur which prompted us to launch another outlet in Lucknow. The aura did gave us the magic.”

Discussing the economics

Building a vintage-style restaurant, compared to a normal restaurant, can involve certain cost and economic considerations. While the specific expenses can vary depending on various factors such as location, size, and design complexity, there are some general aspects to consider.

Firstly, sourcing vintage decor and furniture may require additional investment compared to buying new, contemporary items. Vintage pieces often require careful selection, restoration, or customization, which can add to the overall cost. However, it's important to note that these investments can also contribute to the unique charm and character that vintage decor brings to the restaurant.

Additionally, incorporating vintage elements might involve higher maintenance costs. Vintage furniture and fixtures may require more frequent repairs, restoration, or specialized care to preserve their authenticity and functionality. This ongoing maintenance can contribute to the overall operational expenses of a vintage-style restaurant.

However, it's worth considering the potential economic benefits that a vintage-style restaurant can offer. The distinctive ambiance and unique experience created by vintage decor can attract a niche market and differentiate the establishment from competitors. This can result in increased customer loyalty, positive word-of-mouth, and higher average spending per customer, potentially leading to improved profitability in the long run.
